How to care for your Herreira fashion jewelry

For 18 years, Herreira has been manufacturing fashion jewelry with a jewelry finish in Goiânia. Each piece that leaves our factory goes through casting, polishing, and plating stages — and deserves care proportional to the dedication we put into creating it. This guide brings together everything we've learned about how to extend the life of your pieces.

1. Why does fashion jewelry darken?

Darkening (oxidation) occurs due to a chemical reaction between the metallic plating and everyday substances: sweat, perfume, alcohol, chlorine, creams, cleaning products. It's not a defect in the piece — it's the nature of the plating. But it can be greatly reduced with simple care.

2. What to avoid (in order of impact)

• Perfume and hand sanitizer — always apply to wrists, neck, and behind the ears before putting on your jewelry. Wait 5 minutes for it to dry.
• Pool chlorine and seawater — remove the piece before entering the water. Chlorine dramatically accelerates oxidation.
• Intense sweat (gym, sauna) — remove before heavy exercise.
• Moisturizers, body oils, and sunscreen — wait for them to absorb before putting on your jewelry.
• Household cleaning products — always remove them when washing dishes or cleaning the house.
• Showering with soap — some soaps dry out the plating. Remove for long showers.

3. How to store

Dry air and contact with other metallic pieces are enemies of shine. The golden rule:

• Each piece in an individual fabric bag (cotton is ideal) or separate case.
• Dry place, without direct exposure to sunlight. A closed closet or drawer is great.
• Do not hang near heat sources (radiators, areas that receive direct sunlight).
• If possible, place a silica gel packet (those small ones that come in shoe boxes) in the drawer to absorb moisture.

4. How to clean

For periodic cleaning:

1. Dry cotton or microfiber cloth — gently wipe to remove fingerprints and sweat.
2. For more difficult dirt: lukewarm water with a drop of neutral detergent, gently rub with a soft toothbrush, rinse, and dry immediately.
3. Never use baking soda, vinegar, alcohol, or abrasive products. They can remove the plating.
